How to apply

Eligibility

1. An individual of foreign nationality, who has never held nationality status from the Republic of China (R.O.C) and does not possess an overseas Chinese student status at the time of their application, is qualified to apply for admission as the international student.

2.An individual of foreign nationality, pursuant to the following regulations and who has stayed overseas continuously for more than 6 years is also eligible to apply for admission under this regulation. The six year period shall be calculated from the starting date of the semester (Feb.1st or Aug.1st) as the designated due date for the time of study. “Overseas” is limited to countries or regions other than Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau; the term “continuously” means that an individual may stay in Taiwan for no more than a total of 120 days per calendar year.

 (1) An individual who also is a national of the R.O.C. , but does not hold or has had a household registration in Taiwan.

 (2) An individual who has had nationality status from the Republic of China but has no R.O.C. nationality at the time of their application shall have an annulled status regarding their R.O.C. nationality for no less

  than 8 years after an annulment of their R.O.C. nationality by the Ministry of the Interior

 (3) Regarding individuals mentioned in both of the above subparagraphs, they must not have studied in Taiwan under the status of an overseas Chinese nor received placement permission for an academic school

  year by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students.

3. An applicant of foreign nationality, concurrently holding a permanent residence status in Hong Kong or Macao, having no history of a household registration record in Taiwan and, at the time of application, has resided in Hong Kong, Macao, or another foreign country for no less than 6 years is qualified to apply for admission.

Note

  1. The application eligibility is based on "MOE Regulation Regarding International Students Undertaking Studies in Taiwan." If the MOE Regulations were revised, the most updated MOE Regulations shall prevail. For the latest information regarding the MOE Regulations, please visit MOE website at http://english.moe.gov.tw/
  2. During the course of study in Taiwan, international students, who are approved for initial household registration, resident registration, naturalization or restoration of their ROC nationality, will lose their international student status and shall withdraw from school.
  3. International students who withdraw from university/college after admission due to behavior issues, poor academic performance or a conviction under the Criminal Code may not thereafter apply again for admission under this regulation.4. Violation of the “MOE Regulation” will result in immediate cancellation of the applicant’s admission or the deprivation of the applicant’s recognized status as NTHU registered student. No academic certificate will be given.

  • Spring Semester Application Period: September 1 - November 1

※All required application forms and relevant documents must be received by the above deadlines. If the application is received late or incomplete,  Office of Global Affairs will not handle the applicant's submission.

Application Method & Documents

Required Documents

1.An application form online application

  • Complete and print out the online application form at the website of OGA

2.A photocopy of diploma in English or Chinese

  • Applicants for bachelor degree: the high school diploma
  • Applicants for master degree: the diploma of bachelor degree
  • Applicants for Ph.D. degree: the diploma of master degree
  • Applicants who will be pursuing a second degree (B.Sc. Or MA/MBA) in a different field of study please submit a photocopy of your first degree/diploma.
  • Applicants who are in the process of completing their studies, please submit a letter from the school/university clearly stating your anticipated graduation date.

3.Official transcripts in English or Chinese

  • Applicants for bachelor degree: transcript of the high school
  • Applicants for master degree: transcript of the bachelor degree
  • Applicants for Ph.D. degree: transcript of the bachelor & master degrees

4.A study plan

    Please write a concisely written essay of maximum 3 pages. In the study plan, applicants are encouraged to give their motivation for choosing the university, department and program. For graduate students, potential contribution and research interests may also be included.

5.Two recommendation letters

    Preferably faculty members can evaluate your academic qualifications and research potential.

6.NTHU medical history and examination form

    It is compulsory to use NTHU’s ”Medical History and Examination Form” printed from the online system. The form must be completed according to the instructions. The medical examination must be completed within the last three months. It must be signed by the doctor and have a seal of the respective hospital. Incomplete submission is not acceptable and will result in cancellation of one’s application.

7.Financial certificate

    All applicants are required to provide a financial statement issued by a financial institution showing your financial sustainability (minimum USD 10,000) for study in Taiwan, or a certificate of scholarship. If the financial statement is not under the name of the applicant, then your sponsors must provide an additional letter declaring their relationship to the applicant and their intent to provide financial support throughout his/her period of study.

8.Declaration form

    Print out the declaration form and sign at the bottom of the form after reading through it. If applicable, we may ask the applicant to submit a copy of the statement of travel record, or the Forfeited Nationality Permit Certificate issued by Ministry of the Interior and Non-Household Registration Declaration.

9.Verification of nationality

    Provide a verification of your nationality or a copy of your passport.

10.Program additional requirements

    Please find the additional requirements of the program you apply for from the admission instructions and submit (if any) the required document.

11.Pretest

    Applicants for Bachelor programs must download the Pretest Instructions from Online Application System and submit the pretest (if any).

12.Checking list

    Print out the checking list from the online system to ensure submission of each  required document.

Application Fee: No application fees charged.

Note:

    1.If you plan to apply to more than one program, you should submit a complete application packet for EACH program.

    2.For registration, you must have your highest level of diploma and transcripts NOTARIZED by Taiwan Embassy or Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the country/place where you received your degree.

    3.Department/institute will contact applicants if an interview or written exam is required

    Spring Semester:Before January 31

    Fall Semester:Before June 30

    Acceptance list will be posted online, and sent as a separate email as well.
