摘要： 
In this presentation we trace the developments in industrial engineering since its inception under the name of scientific management with the pioneering work of Frederick Taylor to the diversity of specializations currently being pursued. We discuss the factors influencing these developments, including market, technological and social factors. We also assess the strengths and challenges facing the field of industrial engineering in education, research and application.
