The field of systems engineering is moving toward “model-based systems engineering” which replaces traditional document based systems design and development with a model centric process. Central to MBSE is the use of formal system modeling languages, such as OMG’s SysML, to create description models of the systems and generate the corresponding analysis models. This talk will give a quick overview of MBSE, SysML, industry applications using MBSE, and the current MBSE research activities at George Mason University. It will conclude with some thoughts on some of the challenges, the opportunities, and what we can expect in the future.
