BIOGRAPHY

Professor C. Richard Liu has dedicated his teaching and research for creating impact for industry. Among others, he was selected to receive 2011 SME/NAMRI S. M. Wu Research Award, for having created “single step finish hard machining, leading to a new market and a science base for engineering a new generation of processes, machine tools, cutting tools and manufacturing systems.” He received 2008 ASME Ennor Award “for his seminal research on surface integrity and fatigue performance of manufactured surfaces” and 1985 IR100 Award for his pioneering research on machine tool accuracy enhancement. In education, he is combining distance and campus learning into the same degreed program and has developed new courses on innovation and competitive strategy. He served as VP of ITRI and General Director of MIRL in Taiwan from 1991 to 1994and led a successful development of a new product in industry earlier in his career. He has published over 160 peer-reviewed research papers and graduated 25 PhD students. His current research interest includes nano-manufacturing and HUB-based platform for community building in manufacturing.

ABSTRACT

The speaker will first discuss the rationale of a 1980 proposal for developing companies either specializing on product design or component manufacturing but not both, including the reasons why this idea was not broadly applied until later times when visionary leaders and the driving forces for systematic global supply chains emerging. The evolution of supply-chain based manufacturing was a part of the general trend of functional specialization for achieving the benefit of the economy of scale and cost and risk reduction. In order to analyze emerging trends for further industrial growth, the speaker considers the business process of any company as one for realizing rewards by satisfying hierarchical needs of the market place. Therefore, a company/ industry can grow by providing a hierarchy of new services to satisfy the changing values of the customers, the market place and the societies. Providing the needed functions at a competitive cost is no longer enough. Product designers and providers, in manufacturing and/or service, must anticipate new values and needs of the customers before they are apparent as new trends. The speaker will discuss several cases where companies have used these new considerations to form their competitive strategies. Functional specialization can ensure better chance of survival. Scale expansion can ensure better profitability and competitiveness. Community building is an effective method of achieving scale expansion and new synergy. The impact of cyber-infrastructure as an enabling technology for community building will be discussed. Followed is a report on HUBzero™, which is a Purdue developed web-based collaboration platform with various social networking and data management features that help researchers, educational institutions and commercial organizations to efficiently manage their work. Examples of several successful HUB-based platforms will be described.
